Community Clothing Collections and Distributions
Community Clothing Collections and Distributions
When we first started as Gates of Benovolence and later as the Global Jewish Assistance and Relief Network, we worked with dozens of Synagogues in the NY Metropolitan area collecting donations of high quality used clothing which were then sent to communities across the FSU.
While we no longer ship used clothing overseas, we continue to work with a number of Synagogues in Riverdale, Great Neck, Scarsdale etc and do clothing drives once or twice a year per area. These clothing are then taken to several distribution centers who provide clothing to needy families here in NY. Some centers run as thrift shops selling the clothing at minimum prices with dual purpose of raising funds to maintain their overhead expenses, but more importantly, to maintain the dignity of the beneficiaries so that they don't feel they are receiving a charity handout.
GJARN has no financial relationship with these distribution centers, but can refer extremely needy families to them for private time to sort through and choos clothing for their families and to ensure that those who can't pay anything, get the clothing for free.
